Oliver studied at Middlesex University in North London, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree with honours in Film Studies in 2003.
In 2005 Oliver was one of the few candidates accepted on a film journalism course with the British Film Institute, where he was tutored by former Sight & Sound sub-editor Vicky Wilson. He found this to be a particularly advantageous time to sharpen his journalistic tools as a writer and meet like-minded professionals in the field.
Since then Oliver's stories have appeared in the likes of the Guardian, Time Out, Total Film, SFX , FilmInk, SciFiNow and BBC Culture amongst others.
In 2011 Oliver emigrated to Brisbane, Australia, where for two years, as a contracted freelance film journalist, he wrote and researched news stories for the SBS Movies site, (one of Australia's leading broadcasting channels).
He continues to contribute to other major Australian publications including the popular movie magazine FilmInk and Melbourne's quarterly Metro Magazine, which is produced by the Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM).
In addition Oliver regularly contributes news, special features and interviews to monthly UK magazines such as SFX, SciFiNow and Total Film.
Oliver has interviewed such universally acclaimed directors as Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, Tom Holland, Abel Ferrara and David Lynch, stars such as Lance Henriksen, Dolph Lundgren, Heather Langenkamp, Veronica Cartwright, Annette O'Toole, Brian Dennehy, the late Richard Kiel, (in sadly one of his final interviews) original Lois Lane Margot Kidder and original Hitchcock blonde Eva Marie Saint.
For the past seven years Oliver has also contributed monthly to SciFiNow's popular premier Sci-fi, fantasy, horror & cult TV sub-magazine TimeWarp, conducting career interviews and penning over 40 retrospective 'Flashback' features on genre cinema of yesteryear, which feature exclusive interviews with cast and crew.
Highlights of these have included behind-the-scenes features on Gremlins, Jurassic Park, The Birds, An American Werewolf in London, The Company of Wolves, The Fog, The Thing, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Piranha, The Howling, Season of the Witch (Halloween III), Vincent Ward's original vision for Alien 3, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Jaws 3D, Stephen King's IT, Westworld, Independence Day, Predator, Bram Broker's Dracula and 'Complete Guides' to Amicus Productions, Knight Rider, The Incredible Hulk, The Bionic Woman and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, amongst others. (PDFs of these features available upon email request).
Several of these stories were compiled together in the bookazines The Greatest Sci-Fi Films of All Time, Sci-Fi Icons, and SciFiNow The Timewarp Collection Vol. 1.
Oliver also expanded his area of expertise by writing investigative crime features for the UK's Real Crime magazine.
